Alexander Lukashenko announced that Belarus has allegedly developed a “laser device” capable of disabling or destroying drones at a distance of approximately 1.5–2 km. He spoke about this development on April 22 during a visit to the DOSAAF Minsk Aeroclub.
This is reported by Russian media.
The politician emphasized that today no country has a “100% effective system” for countering drones.
“How do you detect this drone? And what’s the best way to shoot it down? With twin machine guns, or just a single machine gun? Drones have already learned to bypass electronic warfare,” said Alexander Lukashenko.
He added that Belarus has developed its own system to combat drones.
— Our people have invented some kind of laser. I want to see it. It’s quite effective; the defense minister says it “burns” a drone at a distance of one and a half to two kilometers, — said Lukashenko.
He did not provide any further details regarding the development. Meanwhile, last November, the State Committee for Military Industry reported on the continuation of work on the creation of the “Shafran” laser complex to combat drones.
The prototype underwent a series of factory tests and was tested in field conditions at military training grounds.
The agency stated that the tests confirmed the claimed performance characteristics and the correctness of the technical solutions.
It was also noted that the system is capable of detecting UAVs at a distance of up to 4,500 meters, and the powerful laser can shoot them down at a distance of up to 1,500 meters.
The Belarusianthreat: Could Belarus go to war against Ukraine?
Lukashenkothreatened Ukraine and the EU with the use of “all weapons.”
Additionally, Russia may have instructed Belarus to keep Ukrainian forces “on edge” ahead of new attacks in the east and south. This is according to the Center for Countering Disinformation. Meanwhile, Ukraine is observing troop activity and the preparation of positions near the border.
