Nearly fifty war veterans will be elected to the State Duma of the Russian Federation

According to the election results, 49 veterans of the war against Ukraine will become members of the Russian State Duma representing the “United Russia” party. This was announced by the party’s General Council Secretary, Vladimir Yakushev. According to him, these are preliminary figures. Earlier, Yakushev had stated that 86 participants in the war could be elected to parliament from the party, but this statement was later retracted.

Ella Pamfilova, chair of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, reported that a total of 186 participants and veterans of the war against Ukraine had registered for the State Duma elections. A total of 110 candidates were included on the political parties’ federal lists, while another 76 ran in single-member districts. “United Russia” had previously stated that 82 combatants would run for the party in the elections. There are a total of 450 seats in the State Duma.

According to data from 96.95% of the ballots counted, “United Russia” received 57.83% of the vote. The Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) received 13.76%, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) — 9.01%, and “New People” — 7.96%. In total, five parties will be represented in the lower house of the Russian parliament—“Fair Russia” cleared the 5 percent threshold at the last minute.

Earlier, Faridaily sources reported that the Kremlin planned to allocate at least 100 seats in the State Duma to war veterans. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly referred to them as the “new elite” and called for more active involvement of people from the front lines in public service. One of the publication’s sources believed that appointing war veterans as deputies is the simplest way to demonstrate their integration into the government. At the same time, he noted, this does not pertain to the executive branch or financial and industrial groups, but rather to a representative body.

Another source noted that questions remain about how controllable these lawmakers with military backgrounds will be. Assessing the future work of such lawmakers, he stated that it might not be easy for professional politicians and officials to interact with such colleagues.
