Macron Announced New Measures Against Russia – Reuters
French President Emmanuel Macron announced new defense initiatives and joint military exercises, which will be unveiled on July 13 during a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing attended by approximately 35 leaders of participating countries. The event will focus on countering Russia’s shadow fleet, strengthening Ukraine’s military capabilities, revitalizing the defense-industrial complex, and deepening operational cooperation among allies.
During the Alliance summit in Ankara, the French leader emphasized that Russia’s war against Ukraine and uncertainty regarding the United States’ long-term commitments have accelerated the development of European defense capabilities without undermining NATO’s role. Macron underscored the need to protect the European defense industry and to direct increased military budgets toward domestic development, particularly missile defense systems, precision-strike capabilities, early-warning networks, and artificial intelligence.
The French president also noted that the U.S. reallocation of resources is justified and that Washington’s support for the Alliance remains unwavering. Against the backdrop of an increase in its own defense budget, France is expanding its military presence on NATO’s eastern flank, in particular by participating in troop rotations in Romania and the Baltic states and joining the deployment of units in Finland near the border with Russia.
