Melania Trump and Pen Liuan chose completely different looks for the White House dinner

On September 24, Donald Trump hosted Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at the White House. At the state dinner, Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan appeared in radically different looks, drawing attention with their style.

 

The wife of the Chinese president, Peng Liyuan, attended the state dinner in a long red dress with a high collar, which incorporated elements of Mandarin (Chinese) style. The First Lady’s look was complemented by pearl jewelry and a black clutch with gold accents.

However, it was Melania Trump who drew the most attention. The First Lady broke with tradition and, instead of a dress, wore jacquard pants by Dolce & Gabbana. The focal point of her outfit was a white blouse with a large white bow at the neck by Saint Laurent. Her look was accentuated by classic black heels from Louboutin.

This isn’t the first time Melania Trump has broken with tradition and chosen pants over dresses for state dinners and events. This time, the First Lady of the United States appeared in black pants. However, at the National Governors Association dinner in 2025, she wore a women’s tuxedo.
