In Krasnoyarsk, officials decided to improve the demographic situation by closing two maternity hospitals
In Krasnoyarsk, staff members at Maternity Hospitals No. 4 and No. 6 recorded a video appeal to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, asking him to prevent the closure of these medical facilities. The medical staff stated that they are effectively being forced to resign, and that they are allegedly being threatened with being placed on a “blacklist” for publicly expressing their dissatisfaction.
“Our maternity hospital handles over 2,000 births every year… We have a team that wants to work. So why should our maternity hospital be closed?.. People are effectively being forced to resign or change their specialty,” said an employee of Maternity Hospital No. 6 at Krasnoyarsk Interdistrict Clinical Hospital No. 20, with tears in her eyes.
Staff at Maternity Hospital No. 4 reported that as early as June, they were informed of the planned closure of the facility effective October 1 and were advised to look for new jobs. In an appeal to Putin, the medical staff stated that closing an operational facility is not a necessary measure but effectively amounts to artificial streamlining, which hinders efforts to improve the country’s demographic situation and contradicts the president’s directives. At the same time, they said that despite promises of employment, the staff of Maternity Hospital No. 4 have not been offered any jobs.
The medical professionals also noted that about 300 people work at the two maternity hospitals, and there are not enough job openings in the city to employ them all. Healthcare workers and local residents are calling what is happening “demographic sabotage.” They warn that closing the maternity hospitals could endanger the lives and health of women, who will have to travel dozens of kilometers from home to give birth, as well as the health of their unborn children.
