Meloni backed the idea of an EU negotiator for Russia

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has spoken out in support of appointing a single representative from the European Union for potential negotiations with Russia. This initiative aims to establish a unified EU position in the dialogue on ending the war in Ukraine, with the goal of strengthening coordination among European countries on this issue.

Speaking in parliament ahead of the European Council meeting on June 18–19, Meloni commented on the idea of appointing a single EU negotiator for talks with Russia.

“I have long supported the need to identify an authoritative figure who is trusted and has a mandate from all member states to represent Europe’s position, and I continue to work toward this goal,” the prime minister stated.

At the same time, Meloni emphasized that supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia remain the only ways to force Russia to the negotiating table.

"Our position remains unchanged. In our view, supporting Kyiv and maintaining pressure on Moscow is still the only realistic way to create the conditions that will compel the start of a serious negotiation process. That is precisely why we support the 20th package of European sanctions, because as long as Russia refuses to agree to a ceasefire and begin real negotiations, it is necessary to maintain high political and economic pressure," the head of the Italian government stated.

She made these remarks in a speech before the Chamber of Deputies, according to La Stampa.
