Meloni sharply told Trump to stay out of her business
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks that her attempts to improve relations with him were allegedly motivated by a desire to boost her approval ratings among voters. She suggested that the American politician focus on his own approval ratings.
In a Facebook post, Meloni stated that she was responding to Trump’s latest comment directed at her, but noted that she no longer intends to revisit the topic, as she “still believes in the unity of the West and does not think this spectacle is worthy of the challenges we face.”
“President Trump, these constant and baseless attacks are pointless. As for my popularity—being friends with you certainly hasn’t helped me, and it doesn’t depend on my relationship with you. My popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy’s national interests, and that is exactly what I have always done. This is what I’ve done regarding U.S. military bases in Italy as well. Their use is governed by agreements that we have always honored and that cannot be violated as long as I am prime minister. Italy is still a sovereign nation. In any case, my popularity is none of your business. I would advise you to focus on your own,” Meloni replied to Trump.
As a reminder, U.S. President Donald Trump claims that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked him “again and again” to take a photo together during the G7 summit in France. According to him, she repeatedly asked him to take joint photos during the event.
Earlier, Sánchez sided with Meloni following Trump’s remarks.
Macron also commented on the new conflict between Trump and Meloni.
