A Spanish court has barred Prime Minister Sánchez's wife from leaving the country in connection with a corruption case
Begonia Gómez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has been barred from leaving the country as part of legal proceedings in a corruption case, pending further hearings.
According to a judge’s ruling issued on Saturday, Gómez is required to appear in court twice a month. This measure is intended to prevent any risk of her fleeing before a verdict is handed down.
In this case, which also involves Gomez’s advisor Cristina Alvarez and businessman Juan Carlos Barrabes as defendants, involves charges of corruption, embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, and abuse of influence.
The start date for this politically sensitive trial, which adds to a series of scandals involving Pedro Sánchez’s government, has not yet been set.
A Spanish government spokesperson, quoted by the Spanish newspapers El País and El Confidencial, stated that Saturday’s ruling contains “a hint of persecution, obsession, and disproportion on the part of the judge who conducted an investigation devoid of any legal basis and grounded solely in political motives.”
El País described Judge Juan Carlos Peinado’s decision as “an unprecedented step in Spain’s recent democratic history.”
