Meloni responded to Trump's criticism of her bold statements
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded to criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump. She stated that true courage lies in the ability to speak the truth even to friends and to act in the interests of one’s country and Europe.
This was reported by Euronews.
Meloni’s statement was a response to Trump’s remarks. Earlier, the U.S. president accused her of “lacking courage” because Italy refused to join U.S. efforts to unblock the Strait of Hormuz.
"The situation in the world is such that we need to work to launch peace talks and do everything possible to stabilize the situation and restore passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This is extremely important for us not only in terms of fuel but also fertilizers—it is one of the most important resources for us," she said.
In effect, Meloni demonstrated something very unpleasant to Trump. The Italian prime minister, who was considered a like-minded ally of Trump, made it clear to him that relations between Rome and Washington are not limited to relations exclusively with the current U.S. president’s administration.
"We are trying to do everything possible, given that the U.S. remains one of our most important strategic allies. But if you have such friends and allies, you need to have the courage to speak up when you disagree with them," she added.
Trump spoke sharply about Meloni.
Additionally, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that it is currently premature to discuss the possibility of resuming imports of Russian gas.
Italy has proposed including security guarantees for Kyiv in the peace plan for Ukraine, similar to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.
