Karachi mayor announces water pipeline and road projects in DHA — Dawn

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said that the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and the Clifton Cantonment Board (CBC) are cooperating with the government of Pakistan’s Sindh province on water and road projects in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area. As Dawn reports, he said this during an event in Karachi on September 29.

According to Wahab, the CBC will work on the water project together with the Sindh authorities and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC). The plan involves laying a water pipeline from Damlottee to Masjid-i-Aisha mosque on the boundary between DHA Phases VI and VII to supply water directly to residents’ homes in the area.

Water pipeline for DHA

The mayor said the project’s implementation period is 18 months, but authorities expect to complete it within 12 months, by September or October next year. Once completed, the pipeline is expected to supply DHA residents with 10 million gallons of water per day.

Earlier this month, KWSC and FWO signed an agreement to lay a separate pipeline from Damlottee. Karachi residents have faced water supply disruptions for years and have been forced to use water tanker services. In early September, part of the city was left without water due to a power outage at the Dhabeji pumping station.

Interchanges and flyovers

Wahab also announced the preparation of road projects intended to reduce traffic congestion. The construction of either a tunnel interchange or a flyover is being considered at the intersection of Khayaban-e-Ittehad and Khayaban-e-Hafiz. According to him, the project has already been approved by the chief minister and the Sindh cabinet, while authorities are completing the necessary procedures before work begins.

Another flyover is planned at the intersection of Khayaban-e-Shahbaz and Khayaban-e-Hafiz; funding for it has been approved, according to the mayor. Separately, local authorities intend to build a flyover on Khaliquzzaman Road, from the traffic signal near Lily Bridge to the Bacha Party intersection. Its design was expected to be completed the following week, Wahab said.

The mayor also announced the approved extension of Shahrah-e-Bhutto towards Aisha Manzil. According to him, this is expected to create a connection with the expressway and reduce the burden on the Qayyumabad area.
