U.S. Navy Secretary John Fallon has unexpectedly resigned

U.S. Navy Secretary John Fallon has unexpectedly resigned

U.S. Navy Secretary John Fallon has stepped down from his post.

The Pentagon announced this without prior warning or explanation for the decision, the AP reported.

Falan became the first head of a branch of the armed forces to resign during Donald Trump’s second presidential term. His dismissal appears particularly sudden: just the day before, he spoke at the annual Navy conference in Washington and discussed the Navy’s budget requests and new shipbuilding program with lawmakers.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said that Fallon “is leaving the administration effective immediately.”

Acting Secretary of the Navy will be Deputy Secretary Hoon Kao—a combat veteran and politician who previously ran for the U.S. Congress.

The resignation comes amid active operations by the U.S. Navy, including a naval blockade of Iranian ports and operations against vessels linked to Tehran.

This is also part of broader personnel changes at the Pentagon.

Earlier, Defense Secretary Pete Hagset dismissed a number of high-ranking military officials, including General Randy George.

The reasons for Felan’s resignation have not yet been officially disclosed.

Earlier, U.S. House of Representatives Democrat Eric Swalwell officially announced his intention to resign from Congress.

A rift is brewing among Republicans in the U.S. over funding for the war with Iran.
