The IAC has extended the deadline for the selection of judges, in which Ukraine is participating
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has extended the deadline for submitting nominations for new judges to April 12, 2026.
The European Parliament reports on the relevant decision by the Secretariat of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute. States Parties may submit nominations via email or courier service by midnight on the specified date.
Ukraine, which has been the 125th full-fledged State Party to the Rome Statute since January 1, 2025, has for the first time gained the right to nominate its representatives to the Court. During the ratification of the document, the Ukrainian side invoked Article 124, which establishes a seven-year limitation period on the ICC’s jurisdiction over war crimes committed against Ukrainian citizens. Participation in the selection process will allow national experts to directly contribute to the work of the international judicial body. Thus, the extension of the deadline provides additional time to prepare and agree on qualified candidates from the Ukrainian legal community.
It was previously reported that Ukraine had, for the first time, been granted the right to nominate a candidate to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, but had not yet registered its representative.
The International Criminal Court has launched an investigation into possible forced deportations that Belarus may have carried out, at the initiative of Lithuania.
