The Foreign Ministry called the meeting between former officials from Germany and Russia in Baku insignificant
Georgiy Tykhyi, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the meeting in Baku between former high-ranking officials from Germany and the Russian Federation—the aggressor state—has no significance for the actual peace process. He made this remark in comments to journalists.
According to Tykhyi, this meeting is “as secret as it is insignificant.” He also emphasized that the Ukrainian side had not authorized any of the participants to do anything.
“Some people, whose names are practically impossible to find on Google anymore, are meeting and talking about something. The Ukrainian side has not authorized any of them to do anything. The significance of such meetings for the actual peace process is close to zero,” said the Foreign Ministry spokesperson.
The day before, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that his country’s territory “was used to hold a meeting without our knowledge.” According to available information, the unofficial German delegation included Ronald Pofalla, former chief of staff to Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Matthias Platzeck, former governor of Brandenburg.
The Russian side was represented by Valery Fadeev, chairman of the Council on Civil Society and Human Rights, and Viktor Zubkov, chairman of the board of the state-owned energy conglomerate Gazprom, who previously served as deputy prime minister under Putin.
