Russian naval officers killed on Ukraine front lines after redeployment

Junior Lieutenant of the Russian Navy Anton Kokoshnikov has been killed in Ukraine after being transferred from naval service to infantry duty. The reassignment was caused by a critical shortage of vessels in Russia’s Black Sea Fleet following Ukrainian strikes. The ship on which Kokoshnikov had served was not damaged, but the officer was sent to serve on land, according to the Russian Officers Killed in Ukraine project.

The death of Junior Lieutenant Anton Kokoshnikov became known through an obituary identified by the Russian Officers Killed in Ukraine project. Kokoshnikov had previously served on the large landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov, but in February 2024 he was reassigned as a platoon commander in the infantry. Notably, the vessel he served on had not been damaged in Ukrainian attacks. However, in February 2024, Ukrainian naval drones sank the large landing ship Caesar Kunikov, and earlier strikes had targeted several other large landing vessels.

These attacks significantly reduced the size of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and forced its ships to relocate to Novorossiysk. Due to the shortage of vessels and the reduced ability to continue naval service, officers began to be reassigned to ground units. “It appears that Kokoshnikov was among those redirected to the infantry due to the critical reduction in the number of ships available for continued service,” the project’s sources noted.

According to the Russian Officers Killed in Ukraine project, such transfers have become common practice within the Black Sea Fleet following a series of successful Ukrainian strikes on landing ships. Officers who had previously served on undamaged vessels have found themselves on the front lines in infantry roles, facing significantly higher risks to their lives.

Kokoshnikov’s death highlights the consequences of attacks on the Russian fleet and their impact on military personnel structures. The reduction in the number of ships has forced Russian command to redeploy personnel and use them in ground combat operations, increasing losses among officers.

Separately, the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported eliminating more than 6,000 Russian troops over four days.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces also stated that Russian troops have not advanced in Vovchansk and Synkivka.
