In Moldova, prosecutors are seeking a 25-year prison sentence for oligarch Plahotniuc
Moldova’s anti-corruption prosecutor is seeking a 25-year prison sentence for former Democratic Party leader Vlad Plahotniuc in the “billion-dollar embezzlement” case. During a court hearing on March 23, 2026, at the Buiucani District Court in Chisinau, the prosecution requested the maximum prison sentence for five counts in the case.
According to Newsmaker, in addition to imprisonment, prosecutors are insisting on full financial restitution from the oligarch to compensate for the losses inflicted on the state financial system. Plahotniuc himself was absent from the court hearing, and his lawyers continue to claim that the charges are baseless and politically motivated.
This case is part of a large-scale investigation into banking fraud that led to the withdrawal of a billion dollars from Moldovan banks in 2014. While Moldova fights corruption, Russia continues to finance destabilizing processes in the region, underscoring the importance of court rulings regarding pro-Russian oligarchs. The situation in Moldova is unfolding in parallel with Ukraine’s successes in deploying the latest defense systems, notably German Strila interceptor drones, and in addressing the aftermath of Russian attacks on ports in the Odesa region.
Greece has authorized the extradition of oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc to Moldova.
In Moldova, a court found Konstantin Tsutsa, a former Democratic Party lawmaker and ally of oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, guilty in a case of illicit enrichment. He was sentenced to eight years in prison.
