A man carrying an automatic rifle was detained at Brussels Central Station
On the morning of September 3, at Belgium’s main international railway hub, “Brussels-Midi,” a joint patrol of federal police and military personnel detained a man who had arrived from France and was carrying a Kalashnikov assault rifle.
Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quinten announced the arrest, emphasizing the need to maintain and expand the military presence and patrols at train stations to ensure the safety of citizens. At this time, the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office has not officially commented on the legal status of the detainee or the motives behind his actions.
The “Brussels-Midi” railway hub has long suffered from high crime rates: between 2018 and 2022, approximately 3,500 offenses were recorded there each year, the majority of which were thefts, extortion, and drug-related crimes.
