Trump was impressed by photos of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra after the Russian attack — Politico
During the G7 summit in France, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy showed U.S. President Donald Trump photographs of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which had been engulfed in flames following yet another Russian shelling.
This emotional gesture, coordinated with European leaders, significantly influenced the U.S. president’s stance on the war in Ukraine.
Sources report that the sight of the golden domes engulfed in flames and the destruction caused by the Russian strike clearly moved the U.S. president.
Foreign officials present at the meeting sensed that Zelenskyy’s intervention was likely the final push that compelled Trump to more resolutely support Ukraine in the joint declaration adopted on Wednesday.
Assessing the White House leader’s reaction, one of the foreign officials present emphasized the nature of his emotions: “I think he was genuinely moved.”
As the publication notes, although Zelenskyy presented the photographs, it was French President Emmanuel Macron, as the summit’s host, who planned this move and carefully calculated the best approach to take with the American leader.
Although the summit in France was initially expected to be a near-failure, Macron ultimately achieved an unexpected breakthrough by convincing Trump and compelling him to commit to providing Kyiv with more substantial military support.
This important diplomatic victory for European allies was built on years of work to curry favor with Trump and align with his priorities.
When it came time to win him over on the issue of Ukraine, Macron took the lead during dinner on Monday evening.
The participants tailored their remarks to align with Trump’s view of global power politics, portraying Ukraine as the victor and Russia as the loser in the final phase of the war.
During Monday’s dinner overlooking Lake Geneva, the G7 leaders, guided by strategic considerations, also lavished praise on Trump’s deal with Iran.
“They all explained to Trump that Zelenskyy is winning because Russia… cannot cross the front line and is even losing territory. And Russia continues to strike civilians and sacred sites,” said one of the European diplomats privy to the closed-door details of the negotiations.
The main message from European leaders to the American side was that Moscow is in a state of desperation and is carrying out indiscriminate strikes.
