NATO Will Not Be Able to Adapt to the New World — Klimkin

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin is convinced that the North Atlantic Alliance, in its current form, has exhausted its capacity for incremental adaptation.

The diplomat emphasizes that the organization needs not cosmetic reforms, but a complete overhaul of its operational model in light of new global threats.

According to the expert, the Alliance’s problem lies in outdated mechanisms that do not correspond to the dynamics of the modern world.

“I am absolutely convinced that NATO will not be able to adapt to the new world. This does not mean that the Alliance will disappear, but adaptation alone is not enough,” Klimkin stated on his talk show.

One of the key aspects of the overhaul, which the diplomat calls “NATO 3.0,” should be a large-scale Europeanization of the collective security system.

This entails a dramatic increase in the responsibility of European capitals for the continent’s defense, which will help balance the role of the U.S. within the bloc.

Implementing such a scenario will require colossal financial and technological investments from Europe over the next decade.

According to preliminary estimates, to achieve defense parity with the United States, European allies must invest at least one trillion euros in modernizing their armies.

Pavlo Klimkin also points to serious internal risks that could slow down the process of transforming the defense alliance.

Among the main threats, he highlights political instability in member states, the rise of radical sentiments in societies, and a crisis of trust among Alliance partners.

An important stage of reform should be a review of the classic principles of deterring a potential aggressor in the context of hybrid threats.

The diplomat predicts that the nuclear component will remain the unchanging foundation of security, while conventional weapons and response methods will undergo a thorough review.

It should be noted that the U.S. Congress and the Pentagon insist that there are no discussions regarding the country’s possible withdrawal from NATO.

U.S. President Donald Trump is seriously considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO. According to him, this is because the Alliance did not join the U.S. operation against Iran.

The United Kingdom has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement regarding the country’s possible withdrawal from NATO. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized his commitment to the Alliance and assured that he would not allow the country to be drawn into war.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will visit Washington next week, where he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump.
