Netanyahu says in Syria that Iran’s regime is close to collapse
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on September 9, during a visit to Israeli military personnel in southern Syria, that the regime in Iran is close to being overthrown. He spoke on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon near the Israeli-Syrian border alongside Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.
Netanyahu’s statement
According to the Israeli prime minister, the main task remains the overthrow of what he called the terrorist regime in Iran. Netanyahu also said that Israel is “very close” to this and that the entire Iran-linked alliance will ultimately collapse.
He reiterated that Israel will not allow any terrorist army to establish itself near its borders. These statements came amid intensified fighting in the six-month war in the Middle East, the publication notes.

Israeli forces in southern Syria
Israeli troops have been in the so-called security zone in southern Syria since the fall of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. According to the publication, Israeli forces occupied the territory of the former buffer zone, which had been patrolled by UN forces since 1974 and separated Israeli and Syrian troops in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Katz visited Israeli military personnel deployed in southern Syria two weeks earlier. Damascus then condemned the visit, calling it a gross violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Since Assad’s fall, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on Syria and repeatedly entered Syrian territory, Asharq Al-Awsat writes.
The publication also reports that Tehran and Washington have reached a deadlock over the Strait of Hormuz, while the sides exchanged strikes during the previous week. According to Asharq Al-Awsat, this is taking place six months after the start of the war that the United States and Israel launched against Iran in late February.
