Germany has refuted Russia's claims regarding the alleged development of nuclear weapons
The German federal government has rejected claims by the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation—an aggressor state—that Berlin is allegedly preparing to develop nuclear weapons. A government spokesperson called these accusations false and part of Russian propaganda.
According to Ukrainska Pravda, citing “European Pravda” and BR24, on July 20, Russian intelligence claimed that, according to its sources, “NATO military experts” believe Germany is capable of independently obtaining the necessary fissile material within one to three months, and to construct a functional nuclear explosive device within a year.
“The federal government regards this report as part of the usual Russian propaganda. These accusations are simply untrue,” a German government spokesperson said. According to him, Russia is capitalizing on nuclear fears, which it has repeatedly fueled with irresponsible statements.
The spokesperson also said that Moscow is trying to drive a wedge between NATO and the EU and to discredit Germany as Ukraine’s strongest ally. He added that one possible goal of such statements could be to influence public sentiment ahead of state parliament elections in eastern Germany.
Earlier, it was reported that this year, for the first time, the German armed forces will participate in French nuclear exercises. On July 16, Germany and France conducted joint air force exercises, effectively implementing the agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear deterrence reached in March.
