The far-right AfD has topped the polls for the first time ahead of the Berlin election

Two months before the Berlin House of Representatives election, the right-wing populist party “Alternative for Germany,” led by Christine Brinker, took the lead in the polls for the first time. 

According to a survey by the Insa polling institute, 19% of voters are ready to vote for the AfD. Right behind the leader, with an identical result of 18%, are the Christian Democratic Union and the Left Party. The Social Democratic Party of Germany, led by Steffen Krach, is at just 13%, significantly trailing the Greens, who garnered 16%.

At the same time, another recent survey by Infratest dimap shows significantly different figures. In that survey, “The Left” takes first place with 22%, while the AfD has 16%. The ruling CDU, which nominated Stefan Evers as its lead candidate after Kay Wegner withdrew, received 20% in this poll. More than three-quarters of respondents viewed Wegner’s decision to step down positively; however, the entire CDU-SPD governing coalition still faces a high risk of losing power in the September elections.

Earlier, Germany announced a new package of military aid for Ukraine, which includes a three-digit number of air-to-air missiles and additional funding for air defense. Berlin will also continue to supply air defense systems, missiles, and drones as part of existing support programs.

The German Foreign Ministry summoned the Chinese ambassador following media reports of possible Russian military training on Chinese territory. Berlin stated that any support that helps Russia continue the war against Ukraine also poses a threat to European security.
