Hungary's new foreign minister calls Russia a partner despite security threats — Reuters
Hungary’s newly appointed Foreign Minister, Anita Orbán, stated that Budapest seeks to maintain a partnership with Russia, despite acknowledging the threat it poses to European security.
She made this statement at a parliamentary committee meeting, according to Reuters.
According to Orbán, relations with Russia should be equal and transparent, rather than based on unilateral dependence.
At the same time, she explicitly acknowledged that Russia’s current policy poses a threat to the security of Hungary and all of Europe.
Among her priorities, the foreign minister cited restoring trust in the Hungarian government by strengthening the independence of the judicial system, ensuring transparency in public procurement, fighting corruption, and monitoring the use of EU funds.
Orbán also stated that Hungary does not plan to send troops or weapons to Ukraine.
As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Hungary has returned to Ukraine the funds and assets of Oschadbank that were seized by Hungarian special services in March of this year.
Earlier, Hungary’s future Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the issue of returning the frozen Ukrainian funds of Oschadbank would only be subject to negotiations after the new government is officially formed.
Hungary also announced that it would refrain from exerting pressure within the EU.
