Britain's new defense minister made his first statement on Ukraine
Former Health Minister Wes Streeting has been appointed head of the U.K. Ministry of Defense in Prime Minister Andy Bernam’s government. He replaced Dan Jarvis in this role.
Streeting succeeded Dan Jarvis—a former British Army officer who had held the position since last month following the resignation of John Healy.
In his first statement following his appointment, Streeting pledged to provide the British armed forces with all the resources necessary to carry out their missions.
The former health minister, who left the government in May in an attempt to become leader of the Labour Party, was appointed to the cabinet by Britain’s new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.
Reacting to his appointment late in the evening, Streeting said: “Ensuring our country’s security is the government’s first duty. I am honored to take on the role of defense minister. We will ensure that our armed forces have the necessary resources and stand firmly alongside our international allies, especially Ukraine.”
