The Bulgarian Parliament has approved the deployment of U.S. refueling aircraft

On July 21, Bulgaria’s Parliamentary Committee on Defense endorsed the government’s decision to temporarily station up to eight U.S. refueling aircraft and 250 U.S. military personnel at the Bezmer Air Base.

According to reports, the U.S. contingent will provide support for operations in the Middle East. The planned duration of the deployment is from July 24 to October 1.

The final decision must be approved by the Bulgarian parliament.

Iran has told Bulgaria that allowing the U.S. to use its territory for military operations against Tehran would be viewed as complicity in “aggression and war crimes.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hagset canceled his planned visit to Israel for meetings with PrimeBenjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz due to Iran’s attacks on commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and the subsequent overnight strikes by the U.S. military ontargets in Tehran.
