Germany Plans to Increase Gas Imports from Azerbaijan — Merz

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Berlin is interested in increasing natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan to further diversify its energy supply.

According to him, Azerbaijan is one of Germany’s key partners in the energy sector, and additional gas volumes could be directed primarily to southern regions of Germany, where the necessary infrastructure already exists or could be expanded.

During talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the parties also discussed cooperation in the fields of oil, renewable energy, and hydrogen. Following the meeting, they signed a declaration on strategic partnership and agreed to establish a German-Azerbaijani Economic Council.

Azerbaijan plans to resume direct flights to Russia on several routes in the near future.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that he considers the country’s time as part of the Russian Empire and the USSR to have been a colonial period. According to him, Azerbaijan did not have true independence at that time, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was able to prove that it could develop on its own. Aliyev also reiterated his support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
