On May 19, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar began his first official foreign visit since taking office, choosing Poland as his destination.
This was reported by Reuters.
The two-day visit by the Hungarian prime minister and several relevant ministers is expected to be the first major step toward resetting bilateral relations between Warsaw and Budapest.
In recent years, relations between the countries have seen a significant “cooling” due to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s harsh criticism of the anti-European and pro-Russian moves by former Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán.
The Hungarian prime minister began his trip in Krakow, after which he planned a train journey to Warsaw to meet with top officials of the Polish government, with Gdansk as the final stop.
The prime minister explained his decision to use the railway to travel around the country as a practical interest in Poland’s infrastructure.
Orbán aims to personally assess the quality of the high-speed lines, as Budapest is currently reviewing in detail a project to build a similar high-speed rail link between the capitals of both countries.
Accompanying the head of government to Poland is a high-level government delegation tasked with defining the key priorities for future intergovernmental negotiations.
The working group includes Foreign Minister Anita Orbán, Minister of Economy and Energy István Kapitány, Minister of Defense Romulus Rusin-Sendi, and Minister of Transport David Vitézi.
“The areas of responsibility of the ministers participating in the visit naturally indicate the focus of our planned negotiations,” emphasized Péter Magyar, commenting on the purpose of the joint meetings.
One of the main practical issues of the meeting is expected to be the diversification of energy flows and the strengthening of regional security in Europe.
According to unofficial reports, Donald Tusk plans to offer his Hungarian counterparts long-term access to the new LNG terminal in Gdańsk, scheduled to launch in 2028.
Such cooperation will help Hungary’s new leadership fulfill its campaign promise to end Budapest’s total energy dependence on Moscow by 2035.
