One of the world's largest marketing companies is selling its business in Russia

One of the world's largest marketing companies is selling its business in Russia

One of the world’s leading consumer research companies—the U.S.-based Nielsen—plans to sell its Russian division.

This is reported by informed sources, who note that negotiations with potential buyers are already underway, though no specific buyer has been named yet.

According to sources, the company has long been considering exiting the Russian market.

The company has been operating in Russia since 1994 and specializes in researching consumer behavior in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) segment.

Its analytics are used by major retailers, including:

  • X5 Retail Group
  • Magnit
  • Strichka
  • Dixy
  • Metro

Companies use Nielsen data to set prices, determine product assortments, and develop marketing strategies. Online sales have also been tracked since 2017.

Experts attribute the decision to new restrictions on foreign analytics companies in Russia.

Specifically, starting March 1, 2026, regulations will take effect that:

  • prohibit the commissioning of market research from companies with more than 20% foreign ownership and revenue exceeding 800 million rubles;
  • require all data on the Russian market to be stored within the Russian Federation.

According to experts, this effectively makes it impossible for Nielsen to continue operating in the country.

As analysts note, the company finds itself in a situation where regulatory requirements render its business model unviable.

Earlier, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office filed a lawsuit with the Khamovniki Court of Moscow to transfer a controlling stake in one of the country’s largest agricultural holdings, Rusagro, to state ownership. The agency is demanding that 469 million shares (about 49% of the capital) belonging to the company’s founder, Vadim Moshkovich, his family, and partners be transferred to state ownership.

The Kremlin stated that the issue of supporting businesses suffering losses due to internet outages is not currently being considered.
