Ofcom launches investigation into Pornhub age verification in Britain — Cyprus Mail

British media regulator Ofcom has launched an investigation into the adult platform Pornhub. The agency will examine whether the platform has fulfilled its legal obligations to prevent children from accessing pornographic content, Cyprus Mail reports.

Legal requirements

The United Kingdom’s Online Safety Act requires platforms to introduce age verification so that users under the age of 18 cannot access pornographic materials.

In May, Aylo, Pornhub’s service provider, said that the platform would rely on Apple’s age-verification system for iPhone users to confirm that they are adults.

Regulator’s concerns

Ofcom said it was concerned that Aylo may not have conducted sufficient due diligence and testing before introducing the new age-assurance mechanism. Aylo did not immediately comment in response to a request.

The regulator separately stressed that the investigation will not determine how exactly Apple conducts age verification. Ofcom can fine a company up to £18 million, or 10% of its relevant worldwide revenue, and can also block websites that fail to comply. Previously, the agency had already imposed fines totaling more than £1 million on adult-content platforms for violations of age-verification requirements.
