The Bank of Ghana plans to officially unveil a new Heritage Series of banknotes in Accra on November 3, 2026. The regulator said the updated banknotes are intended to modernize the cedi while preserving its role as a symbol of the country's sovereignty, economic identity and national pride.
The presentation of the series is scheduled for Bank Square in Accra. As MyJoyOnline reports, the current banknotes will not lose their validity after the launch of the Heritage Series: they will remain in circulation alongside the new ones.
Security and durability
Dominic Owusu, Director and Head of the Currency Management Department at the Bank of Ghana, stressed that this is not merely a replacement of existing banknotes. According to him, the central bank seeks to maintain confidence in the national currency and ensure its security, durability and suitability for future needs.

Owusu noted that the development of digital technologies and banknote production technologies prompts central banks to periodically review the characteristics of the currencies they issue.
Current banknotes will remain valid
The Bank of Ghana said that the increased durability of the new banknotes does not mean they can be handled carelessly. Citizens were urged to continue treating cash carefully in order to preserve its quality and integrity.
The Bank of Ghana stated that the Heritage Series is intended to combine the historical and national significance of the cedi with modern solutions in security, durability and functionality.
