UN warns of disease spread risk among displaced people in Yemen — Anadolu Agency

The UN has warned of a growing risk of disease spread among people forced to leave their homes due to the military escalation in Yemen. Since July, the number of displaced people has reached nearly 198,000, according to the Executive Unit for IDP Camp Management. This was reported by Anadolu Agency.

Need for funding and access

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on social network X that humanitarian teams continue to provide life-saving assistance to civilians affected by the fighting and displaced by it.

At the same time, the UN stressed that, due to the displacement of tens of thousands of people and the growing risk of disease, humanitarian organizations need urgent support. This includes funding and unhindered, safe access to people in need of assistance.

Mass displacement of the population is placing additional strain on the country's medical and humanitarian services. Yemen's healthcare system is already experiencing significant deterioration, while the population faces shortages of food, water and sanitation services.

Risks for children

At the end of last month, the UN Children's Fund warned of rising acute malnutrition among children amid intensified fighting. UNICEF noted that population displacement and disrupted access to healthcare are increasing risks for children and their families.

The current military escalation began in July and intensified in September after a period of relative calm that followed a UN-mediated truce in April 2022. The war in Yemen has continued since September 2014, when the Houthi group seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces. In March 2015, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in support of Yemen's government.
