The UN predicts a food crisis due to the war in Iran

On April 24, 2026, the United Nations warned that global food security was in a critical state due to the conflict in the Persian Gulf, which had been ongoing for eight weeks. The war caused a sharp rise in energy and fertilizer prices, disrupting agricultural cycles in many countries around the world.

The Telegraph reports on the risks of a new wave of famine.

FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torrero noted that the global market is facing a supply shock that could last until early next year. Due to high fuel and raw material costs, farmers in countries such as India, Brazil, and Thailand are forced to reduce their crops, which will inevitably lead to a harvest shortfall in the second half of the season. According to the UN, in 2025, more than 266 million people were already in a state of acute food insecurity, and this figure could rise significantly.

The most dire situation is observed in conflict-affected countries, particularly in Sudan and the Gaza Strip, where mass starvation has been officially recorded for the first time in history. The economic shock from the war in Iran has already been factored into forecasts for 2026 and 2027, as farmers’ decisions to reduce planting areas lay the groundwork for further inflation. Against the backdrop of Russian aggression, which continues to put pressure on global markets, a new energy collapse in the Persian Gulf is becoming a critical challenge for poorer nations that depend on food imports. For millions of children, the consequences of malnutrition could become irreversible, causing delays in physical and cognitive development.

Trump stated that there is no timeline for ending the war with Iran

Prior to this, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran has repeatedly violated the ceasefire since it was established between Washington and Tehran. According to Trump, there have been numerous incidents that cast doubt on Iran’s compliance with the ceasefire agreements.

Trumpexpressed his willingness to meet personally with Iran’s new leadership.

US President Donald Trump also announced progress in negotiations with Iran, under which Washington would allegedly receive all of Tehran’s enriched uranium without any financial payments.

Additionally, Israel agreed to a 10-day ceasefire with Lebanon and announced the start of a move toward a diplomatic settlement; however, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the war against Hezbollah is not yet over and military operations will continue.
