UN Reimposes Sanctions on Iran Despite Pushback from Moscow and Beijing

The UN has reinstated “snapback” sanctions on Iran after Russia and China failed to secure enough support to delay them. The resolution, which aimed to postpone sanctions for six months, received only four out of 15 votes. Britain, France, and the US were among the nations opposing the delay.

The sanctions include an embargo on conventional arms sales, restrictions on ballistic missile tests, asset freezes for key individuals, and bans on uranium enrichment or reprocessing. European diplomats emphasized at the Security Council meeting that they saw no concrete steps from Iran toward compromise.
France noted that Iran continues to refuse cooperation with the IAEA and has not provided transparent information about its enriched uranium stockpile. Iran insists its nuclear program is purely peaceful, but the renewed restrictions highlight the growing distrust of the international community toward Tehran’s actions.
