The UN will increase its energy aid to Ukraine to $500 million in 2026

The United Nations Development Programme is expanding its support for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure recovery—by 2026, the amount of aid will reach $500 million. The decision was made following a request from the Ukrainian Mission to the UN, which submitted an updated list of needs.

This was reported in a press release from the mission.

To date, UNDP has already procured energy equipment for Ukraine with a total capacity of over 572 MW, worth $360 million. This has ensured a stable supply of electricity and heat, as well as supported the operation of water supply and wastewater systems.

Among the new initiatives is the launch of cogeneration plants in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Additionally, plans are in place to connect large facilities, including gas turbine units, to the power grid in the near future.

It is expected that by the end of 2026, the UNDP’s energy procurement portfolio for Ukraine will grow by an additional $140 million. The total amount of assistance in this area will reach half a billion dollars.

Project funding is provided by international partners, including the European Union, as well as the governments of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Japan.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the country is already preparing for the next heating season and is gradually restoring energy facilities damaged by Russian attacks.

“Resilience plans have been approved for every region across the country. Road repairs following the winter are also underway. It is important at the community level and at the regional government level not to waste time. Every facility that matters must be protected,” the head of state emphasized.

Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that following Viktor Orbán’s political defeat, Hungary should no longer block decisions regarding support for Ukraine.
