Lithuania's opposition is collecting signatures for a petition to the Constitutional Court regarding the government
The Lithuanian opposition has begun collecting signatures from lawmakers for a petition to the Constitutional Court requesting a review of the legality of Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius’s government formation. This was reported by “European Truth,” citing LRT.
The initiative is supported by representatives of the opposition factions of the conservative party “Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats” (TS-LKD) and the Liberal Movement. They claim that the procedure for approving the new government’s program may have violated the Lithuanian Constitution.
According to the opposition, the draft government program was registered with the Seimas Secretariat on July 3, 2026, on behalf of “the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, appointed by Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius.” However, the composition of the Cabinet of Ministers had not yet been officially approved by President Gitanas Nausėda at that time. The president signed the decree approving the government’s composition a few days later.

The authors of the appeal also question Sinkevičius’s right to register the government’s program, since at that time he held the position of mayor of Jonava. They are asking the Constitutional Court to rule that the Seimas’ resolution approving the government’s program was adopted in violation of constitutional procedure, the principles of the rule of law, and responsible governance. At least 29 signatures from members of parliament are required to submit the petition.
Sinkevičius himself stated that the government program was presented at the plenary session after the presidential decree had already been signed. The chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party accused the opposition of manipulating terminology.
The new government was formed after the Social Democrats revised the coalition’s composition and refused to cooperate with the “Dawn of the Nemunas” party. Following this, Inga Ruginiene’s government resigned, and Sinkevičius took the lead in forming the new Cabinet.
