The Hungarian Parliament unanimously approved a 40% cut in lawmakers' salaries
The Hungarian Parliament unanimously approved a bill proposed by the ruling Tisa Party that calls for significant cuts to lawmakers’ salaries and state funding for political parties.
The decision was adopted with 189 votes in favor, with no votes against or abstentions.
The bill addresses the wasteful spending of the previous administration in line with Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s earlier pledge to cut government spending by amending the Parliament Act. Previously, lawmakers’ salaries were calculated as three times the national average wage for the previous year, but the new amendments have reduced this multiplier to 1.8. As a result, the monthly remuneration of Hungarian parliamentarians will decrease from 2,182,488 forints gross to 1,309,493 forints gross, which is equivalent to approximately 3,700 euros.
