South Korea to consider introducing medical abortion pills — Korea Herald
The South Korean government will consider introducing medical abortion pills for women up to nine weeks pregnant. Prime Minister Han Seong-suk stated this in Seoul, Korea Herald reports.
Phased introduction
According to the head of government, during the first two years, both the prescribing and dispensing of the drugs will take place directly at hospitals. After the necessary conditions are met, the system is planned to change: doctors will be able to prescribe the drugs, while pharmacies will be able to dispense them.
Han Seong-suk announced the government's intention at a state policy coordination meeting. She noted that the issue of regulation remains unresolved after the Constitutional Court struck down the abortion ban in 2019.

Focus on medical safety
The prime minister said that, in the absence of an appropriate mechanism, some women resort to unsafe methods. According to her, the issue cannot be ignored because it concerns people's lives and safety.
The head of government emphasized that safety must be the top priority and that women who need assistance should receive treatment within a safe medical system rather than use unverified methods. She also said that the government takes concerns about the value of life seriously and views this measure as a way to protect public health, rather than encourage abortions.
