South Korea and UN Command investigate explosion in demilitarized zone — Jerusalem Post

In South Korea, the military and the UN Command have launched a joint investigation into an explosion near the demilitarized zone that divides the two Koreas. The explosion occurred on September 21 in the western sector of the demilitarized zone while the military was clearing a patrol route.

Investigation team inspected the explosion site

According to the Jerusalem Post, the joint investigation team included about 40 officials. They inspected an area near the explosion site. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the cause of the incident would be examined during further searches and that the investigation results would be made public.

Three servicemen injured

Three South Korean servicemen were injured in the explosion. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said the explosion was caused by a land mine. Opposition lawmakers called for the origin of the explosive device to be established transparently amid suspicions that it may have come from North Korea.

Explosions of mines and other munitions pose a recurring danger in and near the demilitarized zone: obsolete ammunition and potentially washed-in mines have periodically injured servicemen on both sides. According to South Korean media, North Korean forces resumed fortification work near the border in March, including mine-laying and the construction of fences.
