South African Reserve Bank appoints Franz Ruch as adviser — TimesLIVE

The South African Reserve Bank has appointed World Bank senior economist Franz Ruch as an adviser to the bank’s leadership effective October 1, 2026. This was reported by TimesLIVE.

Seventh committee member

With the appointment, Ruch became the seventh member of the South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee. The central bank said that he has significant experience in monetary policy.

Ruch joins the bank from the World Bank, where he served as a senior economist in the economic policy unit. There, he led research and technical analysis and also worked on publications. Previously, the economist also worked at Prospects Group.

Central bank experience

Before working at the World Bank, Ruch had already been an employee of the South African Reserve Bank’s economic research department. He developed and used economic models and contributed to the preparation of the monetary policy review.

The economist holds a doctoral degree from Stellenbosch University and a master’s degree from the University of Oxford. He also contributed to the preparation of the World Bank’s June Global Economic Prospects report.

The appointment came amid elevated inflation, which, according to the publication, is being affected by global geopolitical tensions, trade fragmentation and high energy costs.
