Trump's deportation policy could hurt Republicans in the congressional elections, according to a poll

Trump's deportation policy could hurt Republicans in the congressional elections, according to a poll

U.S. President Donald Trump’s tough immigration policy on deporting migrants could negatively impact the Republican Party’s standing ahead of the U.S. midterm congressional elections in November.

This is evidenced by the results of a poll, according to Reuters.

According to the survey, 52% of Americans said they are less likely to support a candidate who endorses Trump’s approach to deportations. At the same time, 42% of respondents noted that, on the contrary, they are more inclined to vote for such politicians.

Independent voters were particularly critical: 57% of them oppose strict deportation policies, while only 32% are willing to support candidates who share the president’s position.

Against this backdrop, Republicans may face a tough battle to retain their majorities in both houses of Congress. An additional risk factor is the economic situation, particularly rising fuel prices linked to the conflict between the U.S. and Israel against Iran.

While about 50% of Americans supported Trump’s immigration policy following his inauguration in January 2025, that figure has now dropped to 40%. The shift in public sentiment is linked to an ongoing law enforcement campaign involving mass detentions of migrants.

In particular, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, more than a thousand people were detained daily in early March, significantly exceeding the figures from early 2025.

Despite this, most Americans support stricter border controls (84%) and enforcement of immigration laws (87%). At the same time, 76% of respondents support the possibility of legalization for migrants without criminal records who are working in the U.S.

Against this backdrop, some Republican Party representatives are already calling for a more lenient approach to deportations, attempting to adapt policy to shifts in public opinion.

The popularity of the current U.S. leader continues to plummet amid complex geopolitical and economic challenges.
