Dubai police seize 2.3 tonnes of drugs and detain 14 people — The National

Dubai police in the United Arab Emirates said they had dismantled a drug trafficking network and detained 14 suspects. During the operation, law enforcement officers seized 2.3 tonnes of tablets and psychotropic substances worth more than 115 million dirhams, or about $31.3 million, The National reports.

What substances were seized

The seized items included crystal methamphetamine, Xanax tablets, tramadol and Lyrica, marijuana, as well as paper soaked in prohibited substances. Police said the volume seized may indicate that the group intended to distribute drugs on a large scale in the UAE.

Operation based on intelligence

The investigation began after the General Department of Anti-Narcotics received intelligence about an organized criminal network that, according to the information, was preparing to distribute large shipments of drugs. Specialized units conducted on-site surveillance to identify those involved and determine the scope of the group’s activities.

Police detained 14 people and seized the drugs. According to law enforcement officials, the investigation also established the suspects’ links to an organized criminal group abroad.
