Poland will begin searching for victims of the Volhynia tragedy in the Rivne region next week

On Monday, March 23, Ukrainian-Polish search operations to locate the remains of Polish victims of the Volhynia tragedy will begin in the village of Uhly, Sarnenskyi District, Rivne Oblast.

This was announced by the head of the Polish team, Andrzej Ossowski, a geneticist at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin.

According to him, in the first stage, experts will search for the site of a probable burial indicated by witnesses. This involves a possible mass grave, which may contain the remains of approximately 60–70 people, as well as the surrounding area, including an old well.

The search operations are expected to continue until the end of next week. More than 20–30 specialists from both countries will participate.

On the Polish side, experts from the Pomeranian Medical University and representatives of the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland will join the research. The Ukrainian side will be represented by specialists from the “Dolia” Memorial and Search Center and the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.

Ossowski noted that if remains are found, the next step will be to obtain permits for exhumations, which are a more complex scientific procedure and require the involvement of additional specialists.

The work is being funded as part of a project by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

As a reminder, in May 2025, the exhumation of victims of the Volhynia tragedy, conducted by a Ukrainian-Polish expedition, was completed. A mass grave containing the remains of 42 people was discovered. Among them were 10 children.

The exhumation of victims of the Volhynia tragedy in Ukraine began in April. The work started in the Ternopil region.
