Poland summoned the Israeli ambassador over the suspension of the investigation into the attacks on the WCK convoy

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Israeli ambassador after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) closed the investigation into the 2024 strikes on the World Central Kitchen humanitarian convoy in Gaza. Seven aid workers were killed in the attack, including Polish citizen Damian Sobol, according to Notes from Poland.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it was deeply disappointed by the news that Israeli military authorities had closed the investigation. The ambassador was summoned to convey a critical assessment of the actions taken to determine the causes and course of the tragedy. The Polish prosecutor’s office is continuing its own investigation, and Warsaw expects the Israeli side to provide the necessary explanations and materials in response to requests from Polish authorities.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that a partnership requires mutual respect. According to him, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the lack of accountability for the IDF’s excessive use of force are eroding public support even in pro-Israel countries.

The IDF reported that it had found no reasonable grounds to suspect a criminal offense that would require the opening of a criminal investigation or additional measures against those involved in the incident. The Israeli military stated that its units spotted an armed man on one of the trucks in the convoy. The IDF also claims that WCK hired armed security guards without coordinating with the Israeli military, and that the convoy deviated from the agreed-upon route.

At the same time, the IDF acknowledged that several people had been mistakenly identified as armed. Following the incident, two officers were relieved of their duties, and three others received reprimands; however, the military saw no grounds for further action.

World Central Kitchen condemned the Israeli side’s conclusions, calling them untruthful and deeply offensive. The organization stated that at the time of the strikes, the IDF was aware that its team was unarmed and posed no threat to anyone. WCK once again called for an independent investigation. The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia—whose citizens were also killed in the attack—issued a joint statement calling the decision to halt the investigation shameful.
