More than 100,000 Romanians have signed a petition calling for the introduction of civil partnerships

More than 100,000 Romanian citizens have signed a petition to parliament calling for the introduction of civil partnerships to legally recognize relationships outside of traditional marriage.

This was reported by Digi24.

The initiative provides for the possibility of officially formalizing relationships for both heterosexual couples who do not wish to marry and same-sex partners.

The campaign has been supported by 93 civil society organizations. Its initiators emphasize that the adoption of such a law would allow hundreds of thousands of unmarried couples to obtain legal protection regarding joint property, inheritance, making medical decisions for a partner, and other rights typically available to married couples.

The petition’s authors also cite rulings by the Constitutional Court of Romania, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the European Court of Human Rights, which point to the need to establish an appropriate legal framework.

At the same time, the initiators state that draft laws on civil partnerships are currently being deliberately blocked in the Romanian Parliament.
