On Monday, Portuguese law enforcement officials reported the interception of a drug submarine carrying more than 1.7 tons of cocaine. The operation was carried out in the Atlantic Ocean and was implemented in close cooperation with several foreign agencies. Although details about the submarine's point of departure and the nationality of the crew members have not been disclosed, it is known that the vessel was heading to “several European countries.”

The operation, known as “El Dorado,” was the result of a joint effort by the Portuguese judiciary, the Portuguese armed forces, and international organizations, including the British National Crime Agency and the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Atlantic patrols received support from Lisbon, where the Drug Trafficking Analysis and Operations Center, which includes eight EU countries, is based.

This operation highlights the importance of international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, as the cocaine being transported was of significant importance to European markets. Further details on the consequences and possible arrests may be announced once the investigation is complete.
