UN Secretary-General’s envoy Holguín to return to Cyprus in October — Cyprus Mail
Personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General María Ángela Holguín will visit Cyprus again in October to continue contacts with both sides and help create conditions for a new round of talks on the Cyprus issue. This was reported by Cyprus Mail.
Meetings in New York
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, separate meetings were held with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, as well as contacts involving UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Together with UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, Holguín met with Greek Cypriot chief negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Erhürman’s special representative Mehmet Dana. They reviewed progress in implementing agreed confidence-building measures between the island’s two communities.
According to the publication, these measures are intended to strengthen trust between the communities and pave the way for further initiatives.

Preparations for negotiations
Guterres confirmed that he would support efforts to settle the Cyprus issue until the end of his term, which expires in three months. During separate meetings with the two leaders, he discussed ways to overcome obstacles to resuming the negotiating process.
Christodoulides proposed holding a trilateral meeting this week, although it had not initially been planned. According to Holguín, Erhürman did not consider such a format appropriate at this stage.
The UN has also completed recording the preliminary points where the sides’ positions converge. This work will become available after negotiations resume, and both sides will be invited to submit proposals on the methodology of the future process. Holguín noted that mediation efforts would continue until the end of December.
