U.S. Ambassador Hopes Miliband Will Change His Views on Trump
U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Warren Stevens expressed hope that the critical views of the new British Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, toward U.S. President Donald Trump have changed. He made this statement on July 23 in comments to Sky News, according to “European Truth.”
Ed Miliband took office as the UK’s foreign secretary on July 21 in the government of new Prime Minister Andy Burnham. After Trump’s first election victory in 2016, he called the U.S. president a “racist and misogynist,” and later stated that Trump had “lowered the bar for idiocy.”
Stevens noted that a lot of time has passed since those remarks. “That was, in my view, quite a long time ago, and I hope his views have changed,” the American diplomat said.
Responding to a question about the possibility of Miliband cooperating effectively with White House officials, the ambassador stated: “People are people. People’s views on President Trump in 2016 are likely quite different from what they are… now.” He also added that Miliband “was wrong back then.”
Earlier, The Telegraph suggested that Miliband’s appointment as British foreign secretary could cause concern in the White House and create a risk of conflict with Washington. On July 21, Miliband held his first conversation in his new role with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga.
