UN representatives call for increased support for Gaza's children — Anadolu Agency

At a UN briefing in Türkiye, representatives of the organization called on governments and donors to urgently increase support for children affected by conflicts and natural disasters. Particular attention was paid to the consequences of the war in the Gaza Strip for children's access to education, Anadolu Agency reports.

Access to education

UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown said that hundreds of millions of children worldwide lack access to education because of conflicts, displacement and climate disasters.

According to him, hundreds of thousands of children in the Gaza Strip remain out of school, while tens of thousands of young children have no access to preschool education.

Education Cannot Wait Director Yasmine Sherif reported that the organization is allocating $3 million in emergency funding for vulnerable children in the Gaza Strip, including children with conflict-related trauma and disabilities. The program is planned to reach up to 13,000 children through local organizations.

Assistance in other countries

Sherif also stated that the Gaza Strip has the highest number of children with amputations per capita in the world. She noted that this demonstrates the severe consequences of the conflict for children.

The fund is also responding to natural disasters in Nepal, where floods and landslides damaged or destroyed 29 schools. Education Cannot Wait has allocated $1 million to help children return to learning and is also seeking $600 million in new funding to reach another 10 million children affected by crises around the world.
