The Canadian Prime Minister called on Trump to stop creating memes over the trade dispute
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called on the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to abandon attempts to flex its muscles on trade issues. He also urged Washington to “stop creating memes.”
Carney stated that trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada could resume if Washington takes the talks seriously.
At the same time, he accused the United States of imposing conditions that, he said, could lead to Canadian industries “gradually winding down in Canada and being destroyed.”
“When the Americans stop creating memes, stop making snide remarks, and stop trying to flex their muscles—and instead take these discussions seriously—we’ll be able to have them. It’s unproductive, but that’s their democracy,” said the Canadian prime minister.
His remarks were quoted by the AP.
Canada will impose tariffs on goods from the U.S. in response to Trump’s tariffs.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that, starting January 1, 2027, the United States will impose 50 percent tariffs on automobiles, auto parts, and steel from Canada, according to Deutsche Welle. The announcement came amid an escalating trade dispute between the two countries following the breakdown of negotiations.
