Romanian Prime Minister Eugen Tomac stated that he has renounced his Ukrainian citizenship

Eugene Tomac, Romania’s prime minister-designate, who was born in Ukraine, spoke about his citizenship and explained why he renounced his Ukrainian passport at the time.

Tomac was born in the south of historic Bessarabia, which is now part of Ukraine. According to him, he is currently a citizen of Romania and Moldova.

“I am a citizen of Romania and Moldova. Since Ukraine did not allow dual citizenship, at a certain point I submitted an application to the Ukrainian Embassy in Bucharest to renounce my citizenship. I really wanted to become a citizen of Moldova,” the politician explained.

The new head of the Romanian government emphasized that he remains closely connected to Moldova and considers support for that country one of the priorities of his work.

Among future initiatives, Tomac mentioned the creation of a joint Romanian-Moldovan media space, which would allow TV channels and radio stations to operate in the markets of both countries.

According to him, such a step will help more effectively counter disinformation and the influence of Russian-language media.

The politician also advocates for the introduction of joint educational programs and the holding of a “Romania-Moldova Cup” sports tournament.
