Singapore's Prime Minister Expressed Condolences to Indonesia Following the Earthquakes
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed his condolences to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto following a series of devastating earthquakes that struck the country on August 15, according to Channel NewsAsia.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the Indonesian island of Flores. According to the publication, at least 53 people were killed, and more than 130 others were injured. A few hours later, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded in northern Sumatra; no reports of fatalities or injuries from that quake have been received.
In a Facebook post, Wong stated that he was saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by the earthquakes. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected, and noted that his thoughts were with the people of Indonesia, the government, and the emergency services working to address the aftermath of the disaster.

Authorities have declared a state of emergency in East Nusa Tenggara Province. According to the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency, approximately 5,000 people were evacuated, and nearly 1,000 aftershocks were recorded following the main quake. The state-owned energy company Perusahaan Listrik Negara reported that power has been almost fully restored, though repairs to power distribution lines are ongoing.
The earthquake near Flores was the deadliest in Indonesia since 2022, when tremors in West Java claimed the lives of hundreds of people.
